Sometimes (all the time) in the moment right before pre-party panic ensues and I realize that I have no gift and no way to actually purchase that gift without missing the party altogether…I look into my pantry or my refrigerator in hopes that something will call out to me, that the food gods will unleash their mighty powers onto my cooking abilities and that I will be saved, once again, by the glory of a food-related offering. And, sigh, more often than not, I am saved.
Behold the almighty chocolate bourbon balls! And allow me to forewarn you…you will get messy…very very messy.
Ingredients:
1/2 pound (250 grams) semi-sweet chocolate chips
1/2 cup milk
2 tablespoons unsalted butter
2 tablespoons bourbon (I used Jack Daniels…it’s up to you. Whatever you choose will most definitely add an extra kick to these truffles)
Directions:
Place your chocolate chips in a food processor. This proved to be a little difficult at first, so I separated my chips into two batches (I was also using the mini cuisinart as opposed to the larger one).
This is what the chocolate will look like. I will admit I was slightly confused at first and really had no idea what I was doing. I followed no recipe…I just went for it. But I like chocolate. And I like Jack Daniels. And I knew the receiver of the gift was a fan of these flavors as well, so could I really go wrong?
Pour the milk over the chocolate and stir until blended. Then add the butter and bourbon. Refrigerate until the mixture is firm enough to hold the shape of a ball…about twenty minutes. Before forming the truffles, line a baking sheet with aluminum foil. Use your hands to roll each mound of chocolate into a ball. Refrigerate until set, about 20 minutes.
So maybe they weren’t the prettiest truffles I’ve ever made…but they did the job. Plus, once the party goers got into the extra Jack Daniels…they seemed to REALLY enjoy the truffles.
Cheers!
